Self Esteem Change and a Summer Camp

Longitudinal Study of Self-Esteem Before
and After a Summer Camp Experience.

Purpose:
Assess change in self-esteem of campers
attending a summer camp with programming
designed for that effect.
Sample:
59 children (29 male, 30 female), ages 9-15,
attending a 3-week coed summer camp. 17
subjects attended two 3-week sessions.
Methods/Instruments:
Pre-, post-test, 6 month follow up, Piers-Harris
Children's Self-Concept Scale, Rosenberg
Self-Esteem Scale give to counselors,
Open-ended questionnaire given to campers
and counselors at the end of camp, short
answer questionnaire given to parents at
pre-test and 6-month follow up.
Results:
- Significant increase in self-esteem
scores between pre-test and post-test,
maintained at the 6-month follow up.
- Smaller size of change score for subjects
that have attended camp for more than
2 summers.
- Subjects with higher pre-test self-esteem
scores had a lower post-test mean change
score.
- No relationship found between counselor
self-esteem and camper self-esteem.
