Self Esteem of Young Children in a Camp Situation

Purpose:
Determine the effects of summer camp attendance on children's self-esteem.

Sample:
40 girls, ages 7-10, (quantitative collection) and 5 girls, ages 8 and 9, (qualitative collection), upper middle class background, attending an 8 week residential girls camp.

Methods/Instruments:
Pre-, post-test, Martinek-Zaichkowsky Self-Concept Scale for Children, Participant observations.

Results:

  • Significant positive change in self-concept scores.
  • Age not correlated with change in self-concept scores.
  • Correlation between camping activities and change in self-concept scores.
  • Qualitative observations provided.
