ACA Press Statement – Kid Nation

MARTINSVILLE, IN (August 23, 2007)— The American Camp Association® (ACA) is aware of news reports regarding a controversy surrounding the upcoming season of the television program Kid Nation.  In these news stories, the producers are reported to have characterized the production environment of the program as "a summer camp."

While ACA has not viewed any of the program's episodes, we caution parents to understand that some actions depicted in the program may not be consistent with the values of some camps, the camp community, and ACA in particular.

In selecting the appropriate camp environment for their children, all parents are encouraged to research a camp's standards and accreditation status. Accreditation from the American Camp Association means that the camp has undergone a thorough (up to 300 standards) review of its operation — from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. ACA collaborates with experts from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Red Cross, and other youth-serving agencies to assure that current practices at camp reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation.

Camps and ACA form a partnership that promotes growth and fun in an environment committed to safety.
