Reconnecting
Children and Nature!
At our National Conference in Nashville, the Board of Directors and the Council
of Delegates passed a strong statement in support of efforts to reconnect children
and the natural world.
Richard Louv's important book, Last
Child in the Woods, started a movement
that is sweeping the country. Research
clearly shows the benefits of outdoor play
for children—physically, socially,
emotionally and spiritually! And
camps have always championed those connections
with the natural world, whether in urban
or rural settings, in day or resident camps.
Check out the Web site of The Children
and Nature Network, www.cnaturenet.org,
the group started by Rich Louv to help
grass-roots efforts across the country.
They have just published a fine report
of all the activity so far and you can
download the report on their home page.
And watch ACA's Web information for
ways to increase these vital connections
in your own camp.
Camps are often a community's best-kept
secret in this fight to bring kids back
outdoors. If you have not reached
out in your home community to spread the
word and share your expertise and enthusiasm
on this topic, get involved today! Don't
be shy about sharing all you have to offer!
And let us know about your successes! We
can share the news—and your great
ideas—across the country. Just
e-mail nature@ACAcamps.org.
And thanks for being in the front lines
of this vital issue!
The
Children and Nature Network has released
a new publication summarizing what's
been happening with the movement to reconnect
children and nature. It includes
history, research, etc. Access the
report at http://www.cnaturenet.org/uploads/CNMovement.pdf
