There has been an increase in the number
of mumps cases seen in the Midwest this
spring with suspicion that an international
student from England may have initiated
the outbreak that began on a college campus.
The United Kingdom has had an increase
in mumps over the past two years.
Camps using international staff from the
UK should be aware of this situation and
take steps to avoid introducing mumps into
their camp this summer:
| Check health histories
of staff for previous history of mumps
or for inoculation against mumps (MMR)
as soon as possible after placement. |
| If not inoculated,
recommend staff have the MMR (if they
have not had the disease). |
| Include a question
about exposure to mumps in your health
screening process. |
| As with any other
international staff question, check
with your placement agency for support
and advice. |
An in-depth article regarding immunization
recommendations will be featured in the
Spring 06 issue of The
CampLine.
