Nomination & Election Process

Nominations can be made by any member of the Association.
Individuals can nominate themselves.

  • Nomination form (paper or online) should be completed for each person nominated. COMPLETE INFORMATION should be given as the information received is used in the screening of nominees. There are TWO forms, one completed by the individual nominating and one completed by the nominee. BOTH forms must be completed and submitted.
  • Consent by the Nominee MUST BE SECURED by the person(s) submitting the nomination.
  • A LEADERSHIP STATEMENT should be submitted by the nominee for the nomination to be considered. A “Leadership Statement” should describe their commitment and interest in serving ACA (found in "Nominee Profile").

Timeline of the Nomination Election Process:

March

Information and nomination forms mailed to Section Nomination Chairs, Section Presidents and executives and posted on the Web site.

March/April Board Development Committee members contact Section Nominating Chairs/Leadership to promote nomination submissions.
April/May Section Leadership and Board discuss and prepare nominations.
October 1 Nominations due.
June - Aug Board Development Committee Interview nominees.
October Board Development Committee meets to develop slate for election. Slate is reported to the National Board.
November Nominee photos, general biographical data, leadership philosophy and Vision for ACA statements collected for ballots.
December Ballots are sent to membership

By-Law Reference: Article IV, Section 4.2(b)

“The Board of Directors shall consist of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, President-elect (or Past-President), three directors appointed (one each year) by the President, three directors appointed (one each year) by the Board of Directors, the President of the Association of Independent Camps, the Chair of the American Camping Foundation and nine at-large directors elected (three each year) by the American Members with voting rights. All elected at-large directors and elected officers shall be current members of the American Camp Association. Appointed directors may be members or nonmembers of ACA. The chief executive officer shall be a non-voting, ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.”

The charge of the Board Development Committee is to:

“…develop and cultivate future members for the Board of Directors…”

To that end, the Board Development Committee has developed a statement of values sought in nominees for board leadership. This statement was derived from consideration of published board policy on diversity, governing style and expected board job contributions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

NOMINEE PROFILE

The Board Development Committee values nominees that provide overall board membership a healthy diversity in age; gender; race; ACA tenure; ACA membership and partner professions; experience and or knowledge that complements existing board membership in the areas of:


    • Youth Development
    • Recreation
    • Education
    • Fiscal management
    • Fund Development
    • Law
    • Public relations
    • Strategic planning
    • Research

Nominees must be individuals who have the capacity to see the larger vision and are committed to making decisions and considering wide-scope issues with the goal of national impact.  The board is a set of individuals operating as a single entity; melding multiple peer viewpoints and values into a single resolution that moves forward the vision, ends and strategic ability of the Association.

Qualified nominees should demonstrate (1) a commitment to “ownership” of the Association and to its mission and ends (2) a propensity to think in terms of systems and context (3) the ability and eagerness to deal with values, vision and the long term, (4) the ability to participate assertively in deliberation, (5) the ability to share power in the group process an willingness to delegate to staff, (6) an understanding of the board governance model, bylaws, policies.

Board Nominees are not:
            Volunteer helpers
Watchdogs
A recognition reward for length or depth of ACA leadership

Board members are individuals who represent:
ACA section leadership (your section and/or other sections)
Individual camp leadership
Community partner associations/organizations
Parents, camp staff and or campers
