Orcas Island, Washington
Established: 1906
Camp
Details
The YMCA offered Seattle's first residence camp
in the summer of 1891, on the west shore of Green
Lake, as an antidote to "the deteriorating
influence of modern city life." In 1906,
YMCA Camp Orkila was established as the Y's permanent
camping home on Orcas Island's Agate Beach, a
pristine beachfront property owned by the Colman
family. The property was deeded to the YMCA in
1938. Camp Orkila now offers year-round programming
for people of all ages and genders at its 289-acre
main camp. Other camp properties include 100-acre
Satellite Island and a 10-acre site at Twin Lakes.
In 2006, YMCA Camp Orkila, a true Northwest
treasure, celebrates 100 years of the support
and vision of our community's leaders who understood
the importance of outdoor learning - vital to
past success and critical for future generations.
