Although, the new requirements for operators of small passenger-carrying
CMVs does not go into effect this summer, you should be aware of the requirements
as you make plans for transportation for next summer. The regulation includes
filing a motor carrier identification report, marking their vehicle with
a U.S. DOT identification number and maintaining an accident register.
- The Motor Carrier Identification Report is the application (MCS-150)
for a U.S. DOT Number. Information and a downloadable application are
available online at www.fmcsa.dot.gov/factsfigs/formspubs.htm.
- CMV must be marked with identifying information and the U.S. DOT number.
The marking must be on both sides and be in letters that contrast with
the background. It should be legible from 50 feet while vehicle is stationary.
The marking may be painted on the vehicle or may consist of a removable
device such as a magnetic sign if it meets the same visibility standards.
Additional information on marking the CMV for both owned and rented
vehicles is available on line at www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rulesregs/fmcsr/regs/39021.htm.
- The accident register should contain all records concerning crashes
involving the vehicle.
